Blue Waterholes series
Part of the Kosciuszko National Park NSW, Blue Waterholes can be found at the northern end of the Long Plain Rd past the Cooleman Cottage. Access is via the Snowy Mountains Highway then Long Plain Road. At Blue Waterholes there is one of the most extensive karst landscapes in NSW.
Its higher elevations on the western side are alpine meadows, with occasional sinkholes where the roof of a cave system has collapsed diverting the surface runoff underground. Cooleman Sinkholes 1 and Cooleman Sinkholes 2 represent some of the numerous sinkholes in Cave Creek at its headwaters in the Cooleman Ranges:
Further downstream a valley has been eroded, and except for during storms is mostly dry as seen in Cave Creek 1:
Cave Creek 2 shows where the underground water of Cave Creek reemerges near the Blue Waterholes track head:
The creek then joins another stream and slices through a large formation of limestone as seen in Blue Waterholes 3 and Blue Waterholes 4, and a series of spectacular gorges as captured in Blue Waterholes 1 and Blue Waterholes 2:
To capture the impact of the dissected landscapes encountered within these narrow gorges, multiple sheets of MDF sheets have been layered within the paintings to manipulate the perspective. This technique is discussed in more details with the descriptions of the use of 3D surfaces.
The Blue Waterholes series is a subset of the Karst Country series.
