Geology and landform
Phil's approach to landscape art comes from a scientific understanding of geology, landform, soils and vegetation. However, there are divergences between a scientific viewpoint and an artistic viewpoint.
Geology is the foundation of any landscape, just as a vertebrate skeleton defines the basic morphology of a human. Dynamic agents such as climate and vegetation work over time, interacting with the geological foundation, to produce the landscapes we see and admire.
A number of series of Myopic Landscapes paintings capture the intimate relationship between geology and landform, including the:
- Young Volcanic Landscapes series
- Karst Country series
- Tors and other rock outcrops series
- Water series
